Emergency Health Services
Emergency health services consist of various departments, which can be listed as follows:
- Patient reception-information desk
- Patient registration
- Triage
- Patient examination room
- Resuscitation room
- Observation rooms
- Isolation room
- Emergency surgical intervention room
- Waiting area
- Attending physician
- Rooms for nurses and other auxiliary staff
Emergency health services operate within a specific process. These processes can be expressed as follows:
Patient Reception and Guidance
First and foremost, the reception and guidance of individuals arriving at the hospital under emergency health services are ensured. Personnel in this area assist patients with all necessary matters.
Emergency Outpatient Admission
Patients arriving at the Emergency Health Unit area through the 112 emergency call are directly admitted to the yellow area. Those with critical conditions are admitted to the red area. Other applicants are directed to the triage area to register.
In this area, patients are examined by a doctor and necessary medical interventions are performed. If the patients do not have any relatives present at that time, the procedures are carried out by emergency personnel. Patients in the green area receive their prescriptions after examinations. If the general condition of the patient is better or requires advanced technical interventions, they are directed to outpatient clinics.
The condition of patients in the yellow area becomes clear after the examinations. In other words, an assessment determines whether the patient will receive outpatient or inpatient treatment. Subsequently, according to the decision made, the patients' treatments are carried out, and they are discharged. After examinations in the yellow area, patients for whom it is decided to receive inpatient treatment should wear white color identification tags and be placed under observation.
Patients may be admitted to the services or intensive care unit based on their medical conditions after examinations at emergency outpatient clinics. If there are no available beds in the hospital, the patient is immediately transferred to the nearest and suitable health center via the 112 service.
Triage
Another aspect of emergency health services is the triage application. Here, patients are initially given a color coding. The triage application is carried out by a doctor, nurse, and health officer. Priority is determined according to the order of triage application and examination: red, yellow, and green colors. The meanings of the colors can be expressed as follows:
Green Area: This area accepts patients who are not critically injured and can be treated on an outpatient basis. There are no problems with their ability to walk and meet their needs independently.
Yellow Area: These patients are less critical than those in the red area. They can be waited for a while before the examination. Even if a patient has had an accident and come to the hospital, waiting for him/her during interventions to more critical patients will not jeopardize his/her life. Patients in the yellow area are not examined while standing; they are placed on a stretcher and are known as second-degree patients who need intervention within 60 minutes.
Red Area: The most urgent cases are directly admitted to the red area. These are patients who are critically injured, have life-threatening conditions, and need to be treated as soon as possible. As first-degree emergency patients, doctors are directly engaged with them. Moreover, when patients in the red area are brought to the hospital, there is no expectation for any registration process. Patients are immediately taken for treatment upon entering the hospital. After necessary interventions, the patients' records are made, and then the treatment process is gradually continued.
Additionally, triage procedures for all patients applying to the emergency system must be completed as soon as possible. This ensures extra convenience in commencing the diagnosis and treatment processes based on patients' medical conditions.
