May 1-31 Intensive Care Awareness Month
Hands reaching out to preserve life...
Units that look chaotic from the outside, but where everything moves in a certain order and under close control...
What happens behind the closed doors of intensive care units is known to very few. Intensive care units are where the most critical illnesses are treated, where patients are monitored 24/7, and where vital functions are supported. Advanced support systems such as hemodialysis for patients with kidney failure, devices for blood exchange in cases of poisoning, and ventilators for patients with lung problems are used as needed. Advanced monitoring techniques are employed to track every heartbeat and breath of patients in real time. In addition to treating conditions requiring intensive care, these units also provide nutrition and self-care for patients, and initiate rehabilitation. Treatment plans for chronic conditions are developed. Intensive care teams also provide support services to many patients outside the unit when consulted.
